Autumn Upon Us - The Open Book Cafe

 The Open Book Café:

Autumn Upon Us

Fall is slowly sweeping over, with its bronze, gold and fiery leaves, as we crunch through the forest, by its blue silver streams...

Oh come now,

Steady thy laden head across a brook;

Time to find a cozy nook, and lose yourself in a wonderful book.

Quiz: Which line above belongs to another writer? Savvy readers will find the clue deep within this post.

Good afternoon, and welcome to The Open Book Café: a bi-monthly gathering of book lovers, from around the world.

We are now well into the first week of Fall. I sit at my glass desk, slowly sipping my chamomile tea, trying to remember a poem that I wrote so long ago...

Golden Fall leaves

Agroun, alawn aroun me

Berimethe in old and grey

But not of mold and

Decay;

Keep me for the promise

Of anew...

Fall Haiku

Here are mine. Dare to share yours?

Autumn Duality

Nostalgia duels with

Memory trips, smothered hope

And the letting go

Autumn Thoughts

A frozen moment

Immortalized

Thaws old memories

I might not be good at it, but I do like the challenge of writing haiku.

Poem & Prose

 'Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.' — F. Scott Fitzgerald

'How beautifully leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days!' — John Burroughs

'Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.' — Albert Camus

'There is something incredibly nostalgic and significant about the annual cascade of Autumn leaves.' — Joe. L. Wheele

'Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love - that makes life and nature harmonise. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one's very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.' — George Eliot

My Autumn Memories: 1. High Park, Toronto. 2. Memorial Park, Mississauga. 3. Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Ontario. Background: Kariya Park, Mississauga.

'Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence.

Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance.

Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence.

Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.' ― Yoko Ono

'Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.'– Stanley Horowitz

A Taste Of Autumn

Here's a wonderful interpretation of John Keat's To Autumn, by Christine Norvell, that you should read today:

Why are there not more English teachers like Christine and my high school English and guided imagery teacher, Mrs. Mulvaney? If you are so blessed as to have teachers who teach you not only to think, but to think from another perspective, and also inspire you to bring out the creator within, then you must cherish them now! Let them know that you truly appreciate them.

'I won't tell you what to believe, Eragon. It is far better to be taught to think critically and then be allowed to make your own decisions than to have someone else's notions thrust upon you.' — Christopher Paolini, Eldest

On Letting Go...

'You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.' — Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

— Robert Frost

'My goal is no longer to get more done, but rather to have less to do.' — Francine Jay

'Purity and simplicity are the two wings with which man soars above the earth and all temporary nature.' —Thomas Kempis
